If you have ever watched a movie set in the 1920s or 1930s, you might have seen one in usage. It features two lenses, one for rendering the image on film, and another for actually viewing the image you are taking, which is reflected upwards to a waist-level finder. Rolleiflex 2.8D w/Schneider Xenotar f/2.8 lens 291.50 Rolleicord W w/Xenar f/3.5 lens. As a vintage photo fan, the Rolleiflex and b&w is vintage photo heaven. This was shot in 2009, but looks like it could be a scene from any NYC kitchen from the 1950s and up. If you have not seen one before, a TLR (twin-lens reflex) camera is pretty unique. This fun video follows a street photographer as he shoots with a Rolleiflex 2.8F TLR camera.Ĭoming to you from Frederik Trovatten, this great video follows him as he shoots with his dream camera, the Rolleiflex 2.8F TLR. Now when I see documentary films of the great photographers of the 1950s and 1960s using TLRs, I’m amazed that they can interact at all with the world they are capturing, outside of their crucial view through the upper lens. The TLR camera has long gone the way of the dinosaur, replaced by SLRs, but you can still find used TLRs for purchase, with Rolleiflex models generally being the most sought after. Both lenses are treated with abrasion resistant. But with the Rolleiflex’s f/2.8 aperture and motion-less leaf shutter, one can handhold at 1/15 sec relatively easily.

With medium-format cameras, handholding at shutter speeds longer than 1/60 sec is almost unheard of. I suddenly understood what I’d heard for so long about good lenses showing their quality at wider apertures and knew that I had the world at large to go back to and look at again. The f :2.8 taking lens is a five glass construction with two cemented elements (modified Gauss-type) and features outstanding correction for black and white and color pictures, while the viewing-Heidosmat f 2.8 lens meets with the special requirements for critical ground glass screen focusing. My primary reason was the f/2.8 aperture, as Rolleiflex makes the only TLR’s with such fast lenses. It made me stop and look much more carefully, which in turn made me rethink my photography and let go: throw the aperture open and let my eye roam in the depth of the scene before me. For something so profoundly analogue, it’s immersive in a way that I’d only experienced in highly digital VR environments, all goggled- and headphoned-up (which I hadn’t enjoyed at the time). I was going to resell it because once I got the camera in the post yesterday the coating damage was worse than the seller had indicated, but went out today and. It has lots of tiny cleaning marks/scratches on the taking lens, along w/ lots of little spots. Nothing prepared me for the experience, though, in Denmark on holiday last August (2019) of unwrapping my first ever roll of 120, loading the Rolleiflex, with YouTube assistance, and trying to take pictures with it. I bought a Rolleiflex 2.8 (think it's a 2.8C) for cheap. Film Transportation: winding lever with auto stop, no red window, film pressure plate without color coating.
